But
Achan, a man of the tribe of Judah, took some of the spoil of Jericho, which
God had commanded them to utterly destroy. And the anger of God was kindled
against the children of Israel.
So
when the people went up to take the city of Ai, God allowed them to be smitten
before their enemies.
Then
Joshua rent his clothes. And God said to Joshua, “Israel hath sinned, therefore
they could not stand before their enemies.”
So
Joshua rose up early in the morning to sanctify the people, and he brought
Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
And
he tried all the families of Judah, and the household of Zabdi was taken: and
he brought his household man, by man and Achan was taken.
Then
Achan confessed and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel.
For when I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and some silver
and gold, I coveted and took it and hid it in the midst of my tent.”
So
Joshua sent and they found the things hidden in Achan’s tent.
And
Joshua said, “Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day.”
And all Israel stoned him with stones. So God turned from the fierceness of His
anger.
