NOW the whole earth spoke one language and they all
dwelt together in a plain in the land of Shinar.
And
they said one to another, Let us make brick.
And let us build a city and a tower whose top may reach to heaven. And let us not be scattered over the earth,
but let us live together in our city.
But
God said, “Behold the people is one, and they have all one language; and this
they begin to do: and now nothing will
be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”
So
God scattered them abroad from there all over the earth: and they left off
building the city.
Therefore
is the name of it called Babel; because God did there confound the language of
all the earth.
