Reuben
meant to bring Joseph back to his father, and when he returned to take Joseph
out, he found Joseph was not in the pit. And Reuben rent his clothes for
sorrow.
And
he went back to his brethren and said, “The child is not; and I, whither shall
I go.”
But
the others took Joseph’s coat of many colours and dipped it in the blood of a
goat they had just killed.
Then
they sent the coat of many colours, stained with blood, to Jacob. And they
said, “This have we found, know now whether it be they son’s coat or no.”
And
Jacob knew it and thought that a wild beast had killed Joseph.
And
Jacob rent his clothes and put on sackcloth, and mourned for Joseph for a long
time, and would not be comforted.
But
the Midianites took Joseph down to Egypt and sold him for a slave, to Potiphar,
and officer of Pharoah, king of the land of Egypt.
